Description
The garden gateway, located approximately 200 meters south of Dallam Tower at the entrance to the former kitchen garden, is a Grade II listed structure dating from 1685. It features rubble walls, some of which are rendered, with sandstone dressings. The pitched roof is made up of a single large slate on each side, topped with a stone ridge.
On the north side, the gateway has pilasters flanking the opening, which are adorned with flat-fronted vases on panelled pedestals that support an entablature and pediment. The south side includes a later wrought-iron gate, characterized by narrowly spaced uprights that are ogee-arcaded at the bottom rail and feature fleurs-de-lys on the mid rail. Inside, there are benches on either side, making it a notable garden feature. The initials and date EWD, representing Edward and Dorothy Wilson, are also present.
