Description
The Market Cross in Milnthorpe is a Grade II listed structure. The shaft and base of the cross are possibly from the 18th century, while the top is likely a 19th-century addition or repair. It is made of sandstone and is mounted on limestone steps. The cross features a single round shaft on an octagonal base, topped with a ball on an octagonal corniced top. It stands on three hexagonal steps. Historical records from 1823 refer to "the new cross." The cross was taken down in 1845 and re-erected on top of a lock-up built on its site during railway construction, which was a time of local unrest. The lock-up was demolished in 1862, and the cross was returned to its original ground position. Further details can be found in J.F. Curwen's "History of Heversham with Milnthorpe," published by Titus Wilson in 1930.
