Description

Thrimby Grange is a farmhouse dated 1578, as indicated by the Salkeld coat-of-arms inscribed under the eaves. The building features 17th century alterations and 19th century additions. It is constructed from mixed limestone and sandstone rubble, topped with a 20th century tile roof and banded limestone chimney stacks. The farmhouse is two storeys high and originally had four or five bays, but now has three. The entrance is an off-centre panelled door set in a 19th century stone surround. The ground floor includes three- and four-light mullioned-and-transomed windows, with similar three-light windows above, all featuring hoodmoulds. There are smaller blocked windows, possibly fire windows, with hollow-chamfered surrounds that appear to be contemporary. The walls seem to have been raised, and the coat-of-arms is set into the added stonework within a round rope moulding. The left return wall has a projecting garderobe chute on the upper floor. The rear of the building has two blocked doorways with chamfered surrounds and various blocked windows above. The left side features three-light mullioned-and-transomed windows under hoodmoulds, while the right side has a 19th century kitchen extension and a barn. Inside, the farmhouse has high beamed ceilings. The barn is not of interest.
