Description
The Barracks is a house and former stable dating from the early 18th century, with a date inscribed over the entrance as S(?) & I.H 17(4)5, and features some later alterations. The building has painted rendered walls resting on a projecting boulder plinth and a graduated greenslate roof with rendered chimney stacks. It is two storeys high and consists of three bays, with the left two bays originally serving as a stable under a common roof, which is now an integral part of the house.
The entrance features an off-centre gabled stone porch that contains a 20th-century door within a stone surround, topped by the dated lintel. The windows are casement style, set in original painted stone surrounds, with a small fire window on the left side. The stable section includes a 20th-century plank door in a Tudor-arched doorway, along with irregular casement windows in painted stone surrounds.
Inside, the building retains a full-width firebeam, but otherwise lacks significant features. The date above the entrance has been altered, likely to align with the belief that this structure was used as a barracks by English soldiers chasing the retreating Scottish army in December 1745, which is how it got its name. In the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments for Westmorland published in 1936, it was referred to as Church View. There is a right-side 20th-century single-storey extension that is not of interest.
