Description
The former powder magazine, located 150 meters southwest of Chapel Houses, is a farm building that originally served as a gunpowder magazine for the London Lead Company. It was likely built in the early 19th century. The structure is made of coursed rubble and features a stone flag pyramidal roof. It has a square plan with an inserted cross wall and later temporary farm shelters attached. The building has a single original doorway in walls that are 18 to 20 inches thick, and small windows that appear to be later additions, likely created by enlarging ventilation slits. The roof is massively constructed, featuring a central post supported by cross ties, raked struts to alternate principals, corner ties, and substantial wall plates. Inside, there is a flag floor and two later doorways that relate to its post-industrial use as a cattle and sheep shed. Historical records indicate that a deed from 1782 mentions the conveyance of a magazine to the London Lead Company, which was prominent in Nenthead, suggesting that the current building was constructed after the company acquired the site.
