Description

Number 32, which includes the entrance to Yard 32A and adjoins Number 32B at the rear, is a house that has been subdivided and was empty at the time of survey in April 1984, with the interior of Number 32B undergoing renovation. The building dates from the late 17th century to early 18th century and is constructed of coursed rubble with quoins, featuring wet-dashed finishes at the front and slobbered at the rear, along with an eaves cornice. Number 32 has a Welsh slate roof with a rendered chimney at the north end, while Number 32B has a graduated slate roof with a stone chimney at the west end. Both properties share two rendered, cylindrical, mid-chimneys. The building has an L-shaped plan and stands two storeys tall.

The front of Number 32 has four bays and features an original framed plank door beneath a corniced wood and plaster shell canopy supported by brackets. To the left is a 20th-century plank door leading to the yard entrance, and to the right are one 4-light window and one 2-light window; the first floor has five 2-light windows, all of which are wood-mullioned. At the rear, there are two French windows with pointed inner heads and margined glazing bars. Number 32B has three plank doors and asymmetrical windows, some of which are wood-mullioned.

Inside Number 32, notable original features include a closed-string dog-leg staircase with turned balusters, square newels, and a moulded handrail, as well as low, chamfered beams on the first floor, a plaster cornice in the rear room, and some plank and muntin doors. In Number 32B, there is a decorative, bracketed inglenook fireplace with ovens and a small stone sink in a cupboard on the first floor. The main ground floor rooms of Number 32 were remodeled in the mid-19th century with Gothic arcading.
