Description
The garages, workshops, and storerooms located to the southeast of Crossrigg Hall were originally part of the main house, built or extended around 1830. Stables were added in the late 19th century, and the entire structure was converted into garages in the 20th century. The site slopes from northeast to southwest. The two-storey buildings, forming two sides of an 'L'-shaped courtyard, are constructed from coursed, squared rubble and topped with graduated slate roofs. A single-storey building at the top of the plan is made of ashlar with rusticated quoins and a lintel band above the windows, featuring a dentil cornice at the eaves that supports an embattled parapet. The east side has three casement windows in stone surrounds, and an original pedimented doorcase with rusticated pilasters has been reused on the north side. The late 19th-century east range is now used as a garage, built from coursed, squared rubble with quoins. Its graduated slate roof includes a glazed canopy on the east side, and a continuous arcade of six coach doors (some of which are now blocked) opens onto the courtyard under an outshut at the rear. A former cottage at the south end of the range features an embattled parapet.
