Description

Winter House is a house dated 1726, constructed from coursed squared rubble sandstone with quoins and dressings around the door and window openings. It has a slate roof laid in diminishing courses and features end ridge stacks, with the left stack being square on plan and serving the principal halo. The house has a linear plan with a central entry and an added lean-to against the left gable.

The front of the house has three bays and is two storeys high. The central doorway is set within a quoined surround and has a deep chamfered lintel inscribed with "L.E.1726 II .C". The door is a 6-panel design with an integral 2-pane overlight. To the left of the doorway, there is a 3-light flush-mullioned window, and above it is an altered, lower 3-light window with one mullion removed. Further left on the ground floor is a single light fire window. To the right of the doorway, there is a glazing bar sash window with 6/6 panes, surrounded by flush stone. Above this, there is a 2/2 pane sash window, and over the doorway is another 2/2 pane sash within a flush surround.

The interior has not been inspected but is known to contain features of interest, including an early staircase and a first-floor 18th century or early 19th century dog grate in a moulded surround with an overmantle shelf. Winter House is a complete and little altered early 18th century house that displays both vernacular and polite detailing, with a transitional plan form that remains largely undisturbed.
