Description
Hospital Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the late 16th century or early 17th century, with alterations and additions from the 19th century. It features roughcast walls with a cement plinth, topped by a graduated greenslate roof and roughcast banded chimney stacks. The central part of the building is two storeys high and consists of three bays, flanked by a single-bay wing on the left and a gabled single-bay wing on the right.
There is an off-centre 19th-century red sandstone gabled porch that has a Tudor-arched doorway, which is adorned with a shield of the Brougham arms. The windows are stone-mullioned, with two, three, and four lights, all set in double-chamfered surrounds and featuring continuous hoodmoulds. The left wing has similar two-light windows under hoodmoulds, while the right wing contains four-light windows under hoodmoulds. The right return wall has larger 19th-century windows, which now have 20th-century casements, also under hoodmoulds. At the rear, there is a two-light stone-mullioned window.
Inside, the farmhouse includes a Tudor-arched stone fireplace in the right wing, along with panelled doors and beamed ceilings. The building was used as a hospital during World War I and was originally known as Pembroke House. Rear extensions are not considered of interest.
