Description

Brougham Castle Bridge is a road bridge dated 1813, located in Brougham. It is constructed from red Penrith sandstone and features three segmental arches with recessed voussoirs supported by rounded cutwaters. The bridge has a solid chamfered parapet. It serves as a broad County Council bridge on the Penrith-Appleby turnpike and was built following an Act of 1811 to provide a direct route to Penrith, avoiding the longer route via Lowther Bridge south of Eamond Bridge. The bridge underwent extensive repairs in 1899.
