Description

The ruins of Brougham Hall consist of the remains of the hall, billiard room, coach archway, and cellars beneath. These structures date from the early 19th century and incorporate parts of an earlier hall, designed by L.N. Cottingham for Lord Brougham. The site was partly demolished in 1934. The walls are made of mixed sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings, and there are no roofs remaining. The buildings form a U-shape around three sides of a courtyard. Little remains of the hall itself, except for the cellars and some stonework that was originally covered by demolition rubble but is currently being cleared and excavated for public exhibition as of 1986. Some of the stonework indicates where canted bay windows were located, along with a small medieval rectangular tower or turret. The left range ends in the billiard room, of which most of the ground floor still exists, featuring tracery windows in pointed arches. The right range contains the coach archway, which has a rib-vaulted pointed through archway, but is otherwise almost completely demolished. The hall was once referred to as the "Windsor of the North" after the additions made for Lord Brougham, the Victorian Lord Chancellor. Correspondence regarding the rebuilding by Cottingham can be found in University College Library, Cambridge. For details on the restoration scheme from 1986, refer to the Cumberland & Westmorland Herald, published on 1 March 1986. The ruins are graded for their group value with the Curtain Wall and other structures that are part of Brougham Hall.
