Description
Lowther Lodge is a lodge for Lowther Castle, built in 1877 by James Mawson for the Earl of Lonsdale. The building is constructed from mixed calciferous and pink sandstone ashlar and features a battlemented parapet and string courses. It has a graduated greenslate roof that is partly hipped, with ashlar candlestick chimney stacks. The lodge is two storeys high and has three bays. There are panelled doors set within a battlemented open-sided stone porch. Flanking the entrance are loops under shaped battlements and shields displaying the Lowther arms. The left return wall facing the road has two- and three-light windows beneath hoodmoulds, and a battlemented gable with flanking octagonal turrets that project above the roofline. The left recessed bay features a similar two-light window and loops above it. The original designs for this lodge can be found in the County Record Office in Carlisle.
