Description
Augill Castle is a large house built in the castellated Gothick style, which began construction in 1841 for John Pearson. The structure is made of coursed rubble and features a projecting embattled parapet. It has graduated slate roofs with stone mid-chimneys and stands two storeys tall with a total of 13 bays. The original symmetrical front is arranged in a 4:1:4 pattern, with turrets at the corners and a porch on either side. The main entrance door has a pointed arch, and above it is a pointed three-light traceried window. The ground floor windows are transomed, while the first-floor windows have inner pointed heads for the lights. At the center rear, there is a square stair tower.
Inside, the entrance hall features re-used late 17th-century panelling, which is dated variably. An ornate fireplace includes cusped panelling, a four-centred arch, and an embattled mantelpiece. The ground floor room to the left has Gothick niches and a ceiling decorated with moulded saltire crosses and foliate bosses, which are also found in the frieze. The room to the right of the hall has pierced spandrels on the transverse beams, and its fireplace resembles that of the hall. The end room includes a dais and some original doors with Gothick panelling. A traceried stair window is said to be modeled after a window in Melrose Abbey.
