Description
NY 81 SW STAINMORE
9/92 Augill Castle 12.9.57 G.V. II Large house in castellated Gothick style, started 1841 for John Pearson. Coursed rubble with projecting embattled parapet. Graduated slate roofs with stone mid-chimneys. 2 storeys, 13 bays overall. Original symmetrical front 4:1:4 with turrets to corners and flanking porch. Door has pointed head; pointed 3-light traceried window above. Ground floor windows transomed, 1st floor windows have inner pointed heads to lights. Square stair tower to centre rear. Interior has re-used late C17 panelling (variously dated) to entrance hall; ornate fireplace has cusped panelling, 4-centred arch, and embattled mantelpiece. Ground floor room to left has Gothick niches and moulded saltire cross decoration, with foliate bosses, to ceiling; similar bosses to frieze. Room to right of hall has pierced spandrels to transverse beams; fireplace similar to hall. End room has dais; some original doors with Gothick panelling. Traceried stair window said to be modelled on window in Melrose Abbey.
