Description
No. 34 Market Street is a shop with accommodation above, dated 1879. It features painted render and a slate roof. The building has three storeys plus an attic and is divided into three bays. The ground floor includes a shop front with a timber cornice and curved glass windows at the doorway. There is a yard entrance in the right-hand bay. The upper storey windows have architraves, with the second-floor windows featuring a moulded sill band. All windows are sashed. The central window on the first floor is wider, with paired sashes that lack glazing bars, and has a lugged architrave topped with a cornice. A chimney on the left has a cap with a moulded cornice.
The left gable wall, which faces Brogden Street, has a shop front with paired pilasters on either side, a dentilled cornice, and a pediment above the central doorway. Above this, there are rusticated pilaster strips at the corners and two bays with sashed windows in architraves. A small central attic window features a bracketed sill and has the inscribed date '1879' below it. The gable verges are also bracketed. The facade along Brogden Street continues to the left, where it is two storeys high and includes a gabled one-bay shop (No. 2 Brogden Street), which is connected to the main shop by two bays separated by warehouse doors on each floor.
