Description
Birdby Farmhouse and the adjoining barn are late medieval structures that were remodeled in the late 17th century or early 18th century. The farmhouse is built of coursed rubble, which includes river boulders, and features quoins. The front is wet-dashed and has a cavetto moulding along the eaves. It has a graduated slate roof with end chimneys, one made of stone and the other of brick. The layout follows a cross-passage plan, with the entrance located in the outbuilding; access from the passage into the former byre is now blocked. The thickness of the internal walls indicates that the house was extended to the rear, and the current roof was constructed at the same time.
The symmetrical front of the farmhouse is two stories high and has two bays, featuring two three-light windows on the ground floor and two 19th-century sash windows above. Inside, there is a late 17th-century or early 18th-century dog-leg staircase with a closed string, turned balusters, and a moulded handrail. Most of the original panelled internal doors are still intact, along with the heck screen. The outbuildings to the west are also made of coursed rubble with quoins and have a graduated slate roof. They include a byre at each end and segment-headed opposed wagon doors.
