Description

Virginia House Hotel is an early 19th-century house, now operating as a hotel, situated on Queen Street in Ulverston. The building is constructed of painted render with painted stone dressings and a slate roof. It has three storeys and an attic above a cellar, with four bays across the front. The windows are glazing bar sashes, set within narrow stone surrounds with shallow segmental arches. A small gabled timber attic dormer is present. The cellar openings have painted stone surrounds, with the outer bays featuring doorways. The main doorway, located in the third bay, is approached by five external sandstone steps with nosings. The door itself consists of nine raised and fielded panels, topped with an overlight featuring diagonal glazing bars. A reeded architrave frames the door, adorned with corner roundels. Tall scrolled brackets support a cornice on either side of the door. Chimneys are positioned at the gable ends. The interior ground floor features two mahogany panelled doors leading off the hall, which is distinguished by a moulded plaster cornice. The dogleg staircase features an open string, stick balusters, and a wreathed mahogany handrail.
