Description

The railway overbridge at NY 770075 is a structure built between 1860 and 1861 by Sir Thomas Bouch for the South Lancashire and Durham Union Railway. It is made of coursed squared puddingstone, which is a type of limestone, and features sandstone dressings. The bridge has five elliptical arches supported by large abutment piers that have quoins and projecting capping. The arch piers include imposts, and the arches are constructed with well-cut voussoirs. A continuous cornice and a dressed parapet complete the design. This overbridge is a well-preserved example of a large road bridge on this railway line.
