Description
Croston Station Bridge is a railway overbridge built around 1846 by Messrs Mackenzie, Brassey and Stephenson for the Liverpool, Ormskirk and Preston Railway line. It is constructed from sandstone and features a single-span, rock-faced design oriented on an east-west axis over the Croston railway line. The bridge has an elliptical arch made of voussoirs, spanning approximately 8.8 meters, and includes a chamfered string band positioned below capped parapet walls, supported by two pilaster strip abutments on either side of the arch. The south elevation displays masonry blocked openings at both the east and west ends, which were once access points to the platforms below. The barrel arch is made of red brick, and its abutments feature a dressed string band at the spring level of the arch. An east platform is situated against the arch abutment, and the roadway has 20th-century pavements on either side of the tarmac road.
