Description

Ona Ash is a house with single-storey outbuildings, dating to 1693, as indicated by a lintel inscription bearing the initials W.M.L. The building is constructed of roughly squared and coursed sandstone with stone end chimneys and a thatched roof now covered with corrugated iron. The house was likely originally a single-storey structure under a common roof with the outbuildings, and was raised to two storeys during the 18th century. A doorway features on the cross passage, with a small fire window to the right and two windows with Yorkshire sashes on the ground floor, all set within chamfered stone surrounds. Two later casements on the upper floor have plain stone surrounds. The interior retains an original fireplace and heck, with a complete 19th-century range inserted. The roof is supported by a pair of upper crucks. The property is documented in E. Mercer’s English Vernacular Houses, 1975, number 55.
