Description
22, 24, and 26 Market Street is a building located in Barrow in Furness that was originally a house subdivided into three cottages and is now two dwellings. It dates from the early 18th century and was altered in the early 19th century. The exterior is made of roughcast stone with a graduated slate roof, and the building has two storeys and an attic.
The first floor features a symmetrical arrangement of windows with two on each side. No. 26, which is on the left, has steps leading to a part-glazed door that is sheltered by a wooden canopy supported by brackets. To the left of this door is an enlarged 20th-century casement window, and there are two similar windows on the first floor. Nos. 22 and 24, now combined into one dwelling on the right, have steps leading to two six-panel doors beneath a shared wooden canopy on brackets. No. 22 has plain sash windows on each floor, while No. 24 features four-pane sashes, all with projecting sills. The building has end stacks and a ridge stack.
Inside Nos. 22 and 24, there are oak ceiling joists and a chamfered spine beam, along with an end-wall fireplace that has an arched wooden lintel. The first-floor partition wall is made of moulded muntins, although the infill panels have been removed. The principal-rafter trusses include struts and collars, with two purlins on each slope. The interior of No. 26 has not been inspected.
