Description
A row of three houses located at 16, 18, and 20 Market Street, Barrow in Furness, dating from the late 18th and early 19th centuries and subject to later alterations. The houses are constructed with cement render and roughcast exteriors, with slate roofs. The original fenestration was 2:2:1 windows on the first floor.
No. 16, the rightmost house, features raised surround details. The entrance door is located to the left, and is a tripartite sash window with a projecting sill set on blocks. Above, a four-pane sash window also has a projecting sill; a stack is positioned at the left end.
No. 18 has a central door with an overlight, contained within a stop-chamfered surround. To the right of the door, four-pane sash windows are found on each floor, each with a projecting sill and raised surround. A two-storey canted bay window extends from the left side, complete with its own hipped roof, and end stacks are present.
No. 20 incorporates a 20th-century porch flanked on the left by a plain sash window and on the right by a tall, segmentally-arched vehicle entrance with boarded doors. The first floor features 20th-century casements, all with projecting sills. A left-end stack is shared with the adjoining property at No. 22 Market Street. A deed related to No. 18 indicates a commencement date as early as 1770.
