Description

This building is a cow house and barn with an attached horse-engine house, located northeast of the Crofters Public House. It dates from the late 18th century to the early to mid-19th century and has been altered over time. The structure is built from yellow and red sandstone rubble, with slate and corrugated sheet roofs. It has an L-shaped design, featuring a two-storey barn with a lower cow house attached at right angles. The horse-engine house, which is one storey, is located at the north end of the barn, and there is a lean-to addition on the west side.

The barn, dating from the late 18th century, has a chamfered plinth, large quoins, slit vents, and square vent holes. The east side, which faces the yard, includes four doorways with basket arches made of alternating yellow and red voussoirs. The doorway on the right is at first-floor level and is above a horizontally-sliding door. The gabled end features an incomplete owl hole, indicating that the roof has been lowered. The cow house has its south side facing the yard and contains five doors and five windows, all with square heads and projecting sills. At the time of the survey, these were all boarded up, with the left door and window set within an infilled arch. There are also three incomplete ridge vents.

The horse-engine house is rectangular and has three segmentally-arched openings in its gabled north end. Inside, the cow house features pattern-book king-post trusses, while the horse-engine house has a massive king-post truss from which two parallel beams link to the barn. The barn roof has later iron trusses.
