Description

This is an 18th-century cottage with an adjoining barn range, located on the north side of Newby, near Newby by Kirkby Moorside. The cottage was extended into the barn in the early to mid-19th century, with new windows and a door added at that time. The cottage is constructed of rubble, with a wet-dashed finish, while the barn is lime-washed. Both have graduated slate roofs. The overall arrangement is of two low storeys and 7 bays. The 4-bay cottage has a 20th-century glazed wooden porch with a plank inner door, as well as two Yorkshire sash windows with glazing bars in dressed stone surrounds on each floor to the right. A blocked opening, likely the original door, is present on the ground floor far right, marked by a drip-course above. The 3-bay barn range features a segment-headed wagon entrance with a plank door and a small casement above, all set in dressed stone surrounds. An outshut on the far left has steps leading to the first floor on its return. All doors are plank. The cottage has a stone mid chimney, and the end of the building has a brick chimney.
