Description

Gilling Reane House with integral lodge and adjoining garage was built around 1891 by J.F. Curwen for G.E. Moser. The structure features snecked rubble with quoins, and the first floor of the lodge is tile-hung. It has hipped roofs covered with graduated slate, showcasing an Arts and Crafts style. The building has an asymmetrical layout, with the lodge and garage located to the west. The house and lodge are two storeys high with attics on two levels, while the garage is single-storey.

The main entrance of the house features part-glazed double doors flanked by windows, all set within a basket-headed arch. The glazing in the entrance and the large oriel window above is decoratively leaded. There is a canted bay window to the left and multi-light casements to the right and above, along with an ornate two-tier dormer over the oriel. A hammer-dressed stone band runs between the floors. The house roof includes gablets, swept eaves, and tile-hung dormers, while the garage has a pyramidal roof.

The lodge, which is set back on the right, features a jettied first floor and a polygonal full-height bay at the angle between the house and lodge, which has a glazed upper storey and a two-tier cupola roof. The building is adorned with moulded cast iron guttering and tall, grouped stone chimneys with cylindrical shafts.

Inside, the house retains its original woodwork throughout. A notable feature is the entrance hall, which includes a large framed newel stair that leads up to the attics, complete with turned newels, splat balusters on a closed string, and a moulded handrail.
