Description
Bewley Castle is a ruin that was once the residence of the bishops of Carlisle. The substantial remains at the south end of the castle, which rise up to 30 feet high, date from the late 14th century to early 15th century. The structure is built of ashlar and rubble and is currently roofless. One ground floor room still features a segmental barrel vault. Additionally, there are remains of two garderobes, and various windows can still be seen. For a full description, plan, and photograph, refer to the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England, as it is also a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
