Description
Skirsgill is a country house built in 1795 for the Whelpdale family, with an early 19th-century extension for the Parkin family. The house features red sandstone ashlar walls, string courses, an eaves cornice, a partly open balustraded parapet, and angle pilasters that rise as chimneys, all set on a chamfered plinth. The hipped roof is made of graduated greenslate and has red sandstone banded ashlar chimney stacks.
The building is 2½ storeys high and has 7 bays, with 2-storey, single-bay wings on either side. There are steps leading up to a central glazed door with a fanlight, situated in a stone porch that has panel recesses, a console-bracketed cornice, and an open balustraded parapet. Above the entrance is a Venetian window, and there is a tripartite attic window. The bow-fronted flanking bays contain sash windows with glazing bars, all in plain reveals. The wings also have sash windows with glazing bars in plain reveals beneath open balustraded parapets.
The left return wall features a pilastered bay window and similar sash windows as seen on the facade. The right return wall has a large projecting pilastered porch with a round arch made of alternate voussoirs and flanking brackets, with panelled double doors inside. The rear of the house has 7 recessed bays with projecting pedimented wings, and between these wings is a covered gallery supported by Ionic columns, featuring a plain frieze and a modillioned cornice.
