Description
The National Westminster Bank, located at No 55 on Main Street, is a mid-19th century building that stands two storeys tall with an attic. It features a classical design constructed from ashlar stone and topped with a slate roof. The facade has seven bays, with a pediment that projects forward in the fourth and fifth bays. There are four chimneys that have setbacks, and the ground floor displays banded rustication. The building includes a plinth, a sill band on the first floor, an entablature, and a blocking course.
The ground floor windows have sunk plain surrounds with deeper sunk panels beneath them, while the first floor windows feature a single roll on the arris. All windows are sashed with glazing bars, except for the left-hand side ground floor windows, which are sashed, and the modern fixed windows in bays four to seven. Doorways are located in the third bay and at the center of the break, both topped with cornices on elaborate consoles. The doors are four-panel designs with rectangular fanlights above.
Inside, the vestibule and banking hall are adorned with mahogany doorcases that have cornices on consoles. There is a panelled counter supported by fluted Doric pilasters. The staircase features a semicircular end, with stone treads and foliated cast iron balusters. On the first floor, there is a large room with panelled window reveals that extend down to the floor.
