Description

The Red Dragon Hotel, located at 59 Main Street, is a building dating from the 17th century or early 18th century, with alterations made in the 19th century. It stands two and a half storeys tall and is rendered with a slate roof and two chimneys. The building features a wooden eaves cornice and has two coupled windows with plain surrounds; the ground floor windows are sashed, while the first-floor windows are sashed with all glazing bars. There is a continuous dormer that includes three groups of three lights. The doorway is adorned with fluted pilasters and an entablature, which holds an oval cartouche that appears to be dated 1830 but is painted over. The door consists of nine raised and fielded panels.

Inside, the hotel has moulded muntin and plank partitions on either side of the front door. The partition to the left has been cut through to form an arch, while the one to the right has been recently destroyed beyond a modern inner door. There is a corbelled chimneypiece with a moulded surround and cornice. The open well closed string staircase, dating from around 1700, features a heavy moulded handrail, square newels with acorn finials, and later stick balusters. The main rooms at the front on the ground and first floors showcase exposed chamfered beams, with one beam on the first floor showing stud holes. Additionally, there are two cupboards on the staircase with raised and fielded panels.
