Description
54 and 56 Main Street is a 17th-century building that stands two storeys high, featuring pebbledash over rubble and a slate roof with two chimneys. There is a passage to the yard on the left side. The ground floor has modern windows and doors, while the first floor includes one small two-light window with a chamfered mullion that is now blocked. The other first-floor windows have plain reveals and modern casements, with the right side window featuring a single unmoulded mullion. At the rear, a gabled wing extends back, which has two first-floor windows with wooden mullions and transoms, along with leaded casements. Inside, there is a large segmental-headed fireplace dating from around 1600, which contains an early 18th-century chimneypiece that is corbelled and has a cornice. The first floor also features slotted lath partitions and a collar roof. This building was formerly known as the Wheat Sheaf Inn.
