Description

This is a building dating from the 17th or 18th century, with a 19th-century facade, situated on Main Street. It is a three-storey structure with a slate roof and one chimney on No. 40 and two on No. 44. The exterior is plastered, and it features four sash windows on each floor, originally with sills and plain reveals. The windows at No. 44 now have moulded architraves. A one-storey gabled stone forebuilding with a slate roof is attached to No. 40. The doorway and shop window at No. 40 have plain surrounds. No. 44 has a late 19th or early 20th-century shopfront with a continuous wooden entablature and wooden colonnettes, incorporating a modern door.

A central passageway retains a moulded jamb and lintel dating from the early 18th century. No. 44 extends to the rear along a cobbled yard, with first-floor access via renewed wooden steps. It adjoins Nos. 42A and 42B. These are of rubble construction, were derelict until recently, and have an entirely modern interior.

Inside No. 44, the first floor contains boxed beams and doors with two raised and fielded panels. A two-flight dogleg staircase rises from this floor, featuring square newels, a heavy moulded handrail, and splat balusters.
