Description

The Snooty Fox Tavern, formerly known as The Green Dragon Hotel, is a late 17th century or early 18th century inn located on Main Street. The building stands three storeys high and is finished with plaster and a slate roof, featuring four chimneys. It has a plinth and rusticated quoins, with windows that have sills and plain reveals. On the ground floor, there are two coupled windows, and most of the windows are sashed with all glazing bars, although two on the second floor were recently blind. The doorway has a wooden architrave and formerly had a consoled hood above it, leading to a six-panel door. A passageway on the right side, which had a segmental chamfered head, has been recently closed off.

Inside, the ground floor has undergone considerable alterations but still retains a large corbelled chimney-piece with a moulded surround and cornice, an incised keystone, and two round-headed niches in either jamb. To the left of the chimney-piece is a fitted spice cupboard with "R.P. 1711" inscribed on the door. To the right, there is a larger cupboard with raised and fielded panels, added since 1934. The stairway is a four-flight closed string dogleg design with square newels and a heavy handrail, although it features modern stick balusters. The top flight has renewed splat balusters of late 17th century style. On the first floor, there is a round-headed niche in the wall of a recently subdivided room, along with two 17th century and three 18th century panelled doors. The second floor contains three latched plank doors, one 17th century panelled door, and one 18th century door with raised and fielded panels. In the attic, there is one 17th century panelled door. The building features a collar and tie beam roof. The Snooty Fox Tavern was formerly known as the Green Dragon and was one of the principal inns, which included an Assembly Room in the now-demolished outbuildings.
