Description

Nos 47 and 49 Main Street consist of an 18th or early 19th century facade applied to an older building. The property is three and a half storeys high, with a plastered exterior and a slate roof. A single chimney is present. There are three windows per floor, featuring moulded sills and architraves, and sash windows with all original glazing bars. A flat-roofed, continuous attic dormer sits above. To the left-hand side is a yard entrance with a segmental head.

Inside, on the second floor, wooden lintels are above the windows, and there are stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops. A wooden plaque bearing the date "1640", previously loose within the building, is now fixed to one of the beams.

At the rear, No 49 has a two-storey range constructed of rubble and covered by a slate roof, with sash windows having all original glazing bars. Historically, this building, together with No 51, was part of the Wheat Sheaf Inn, which served as the town's primary inn until the early 19th century.
