Description

Carleton Farmhouse and adjoining barns date from the 1770s. The farmhouse is constructed of dressed red sandstone with a graduated slate roof and cream brick chimney stacks. It is a two-storey, three-bay building. The entrance features a moulded stone surround with an ornamental frieze and moulded pediment. Moulded stone surrounds windows, and projecting ashlar courses connect the entrance surround with the window above. The farmhouse has a 20th-century glass door and replacement single-pane sash windows. The gable has coping and kneelers.

An L-shaped barn adjoins the farmhouse to the left, sharing a common roof and front wall. It is built of sandstone rubble with a graduated slate roof, and features arched cart entrances and slit vents. A 20th-century door and steel casement windows are present, and there is a plank loft door above. A lower, set-back barn is located to the right, built of similar materials and details, with ground-floor plank doors and windows, and slit vents above.
