Description

The farm buildings located 30 meters north-northwest of Birdoswald Farmhouse, likely built around 1858, consist of a hay-storage barn, byre, stabling and tack-room, pig sties, and an ash house, all arranged around a small yard. The structures are made of coursed rubble masonry and feature Welsh slate gable-end roofs, with one and two storeys. This group is part of a larger farmstead, which includes a roadside range and buildings converted for use as an exhibition centre and shop, although those are not listed.

In the southern range, there is an ash house with a planked door and a small opening for depositing ash, a tack room with a planked door and a casement window, and a cart shed with double planked doors that have strap hinges beneath a flat wooden lintel. The western range includes a storage room accessed from the south via external stone stairs and a 'stable-type' door, leading into the stable area through a large stone elliptically headed arched doorway. Adjacent to this is the byre, which features two elliptical stone arched entrances facing the yard.

The northern range contains the barn, which has two openings facing the yard with elliptical headed archways and high sills, used for hay storage, along with a large vehicular entrance to the east. The eastern range, which closes off the yard, includes two pig sties with planked doors and strap hinges, as well as blocked swill holes. The roofs are generally constructed of sawn timber, except for the byre, which has a rougher side-purlin roof.
