Description
The Old Vicarage, located east of Upper Denton Church, is a bastle house that likely dates from the late 16th century. It features thick calciferous sandstone walls sourced from the nearby Roman Wall, large flush quoins, coped gables, and red sandstone dressings, although the roof is missing. The building is two storeys high with a single bay. The north face has a ground floor entrance framed by a chamfered red sandstone surround, while a former doorway above has partially collapsed. There are small windows in the side walls, and the rear of the building once had a large upper floor window that has also collapsed. Inside, there are remains of an upper floor fireplace, but the floors have gone. At the time of the last survey, the building was derelict and unoccupied.
