Description
The railway bridge across the Poltross Burn, located north of Milecastle 48 on Hadrian's Wall, was built around 1838, possibly designed by Benjamin Green for the Newcastle and Carlisle Railway Company. It is constructed from snecked dressed stone, featuring a rebuilt brick arch and tunnel. The bridge spans a narrow and steep-sided valley, characterized by a very tall and narrow round archway. The rebuilt arch consists of five rows of header bond. The side walls that support the arch have two offsets near the base. The front and rear walls flanking the arch project forward and are battered. Above the track level, there is a horizontal parapet with chamfered coping that also breaks forward over the end piers.
