Description

Hadrian's Wall Milecastle and Turrets, located in Thirlwall, date back to AD 122 and were reconstructed in AD 205. The milecastle, numbered 47, along with turrets 47A and 47B, features a rubble core with dressed stone faces. The wall runs west from Holmhead to Gilsland, with several short sections of approximately 1.0 metre high wall masonry present. These are the remains of the milecastle and turrets, which are designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
