Description
Thirlwall Castle is a set of castle ruins, likely dating from the mid-14th century. The masonry is largely made from re-used stone from the nearby Hadrian's Wall, featuring dressed stone facing a rubble core. The castle has a rectangular plan with a slightly projecting north-east tower. The walls are between 2.5 to 3.0 metres thick and stand up to two or three storeys high on the north and west sides. The east wall is of similar height but has partially collapsed at the south, while the south wall has almost entirely fallen down. There are fragments of a chamfered plinth, and the north-east tower and corners are characterized by large squared quoins. The structure has scattered loops set in flush surrounds with squared alternating jambs, but there are no remains of vaulting. At the time of the survey, the castle was in a dangerous condition and is designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
