Description

Low Old Shield Farmhouse is a bastle house that has been converted into a farmhouse. It dates from the late 16th to early 17th century, with openings on the front dating to around 1700 and a 19th-century outshut at the rear. The building is constructed of coursed rubble and features a Welsh slate roof, along with stone and brick chimneys. The original entrance is located in the left gable end.

The farmhouse is two storeys high and has two bays, with a large boulder plinth on the front and sides. There is a late 19th-century gabled stone porch with a replaced door to the left of the centre. Inside the porch, there is a moulded Tudor-arched doorway with run-out stops on the front wall. The ground floor features a 6-pane sash window in the right opening, while replaced casements are found elsewhere in fragmentary double-chamfered surrounds. A window on the first floor to the right retains a chamfered stone mullion, and there is possibly re-used Roman wall masonry to the right of this window. The roof has a coped right gable, with a stone stack on the left end that has a top ledge, and a rebuilt brick stack on the right end.

There is a blocked original doorway with alternating jambs on the gabled left return, and a single-storey added rear outshut with a pent roof. The interior features walls that are 1.25 metres thick, and both ground-floor rooms have adzed ceiling beams of heavy scantling. A chimney flue has been inserted in front of the original gable-end entry. The farmbuilding on the right return is not of special interest.
