Description

Farlam Hall Cottage comprises two houses, originally a single bastle house, likely dating to the late 16th century with alterations in the mid-19th century. The building is constructed of thick calciferous sandstone with a Welsh slate roof and yellow brick chimney stacks. Each house is two storeys and two bays. No. 6 has a single-storey, two-bay lean-to extension to the front, built of hammer-dressed calciferous sandstone with a Welsh slate roof. It features a plank door in a wooden surround, and a two-light wooden casement window. No. 5 has a central plank door with a 19th-century rusticated surround. Ground floor sash windows with glazing bars have similar surrounds, accompanied by gabled dormers above. A filled ground floor entrance at the division between the houses indicates an earlier configuration. An entrance in the end wall to the right, now filled, has a chamfered surround similar to that found at the Denton Foot bastle house nearby, which is dated 1594.
