Description
Office Cottage is a house that was formerly a colliery office, built around 1836 with some additions made in the mid-19th century. It was constructed for the Earl of Carlisle's collieries and the lessee, James Thompson. The building is made of hammer-dressed calciferous sandstone, featuring red sandstone quoins and dressings, and has a hipped Welsh slate roof with red brick and stone chimney stacks. It is a single-storey structure with two bays and an offset parallel extension at the rear, which shares similar architectural details. The entrance features a plank door with a rusticated surround and a hood mould. The double sash windows, which include glazing bars, also have similar surrounds and hood moulds. The collieries were mostly closed by the National Coal Board in 1953. The cottage is listed partly for its group value with the nearby Kirkhouse Farmhouse.
