Description
Bewcastle War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1919, with later additions for the Second World War. It is situated on a hard-standing area to the west of the entrance to the Grade II*-listed Church of St Cuthbert, within the churchyard, and is near the Grade II-listed former rectory known as Banna, as well as the scheduled monument of Bewcastle Roman fort.
The memorial is made of granite and features an obelisk that rises from a chamfered square base. This base supports a square plinth with a moulded cornice and a tapering foot, all resting on a single-step base. The inscriptions and names are crafted in lead lettering, painted black.
The main inscription is located on the east face and reads: "IN HONOUR/ AND IN MEMORY OF/ SOLDIERS/ FROM THIS PARISH/ WHO DIED FOR THEIR COUNTRY/ IN/ THE GREAT WARS/ 1914 – 1918/ 1939 – 1945." Above this inscription is a symbol of a Latin cross, also made of lead. The names of 19 individuals who died during the First World War are inscribed on the other faces of the plinth, including their respective regiments. Three names related to the Second World War are located beneath the principal inscription, affixed to the foot of the plinth.
