Description
The barn and byres located to the south-west of Askerton Castle date from the early 19th century. They are constructed from calciferous sandstone rubble with flush quoins, featuring a graduated green slate roof on the barn and a Welsh slate roof on the byres. The structure is single storey with a loft in the barn, while the byres do not have a loft, enclosing a farmyard on four sides.
The barn includes a large plank door within a segmental-arched cart entrance, with a lower segmental arch to the right that has a loft door above it. The end walls of the barn have slit vents positioned at two levels. The rear double span of the barn has open sides, supported by cast-iron columns. The byres feature half plank doors and casement windows, with lower ranges on two sides. This building is included partly for its group value with Askerton Castle.
