Description
Low Grains is a byre and barn that was formerly a farmhouse and barn, dating from the late 17th century or early 18th century, with alterations dated 1754 above the entrance. An extension to the barn features a reused lintel with the initials J. & A.M. and the date 1815. The building is constructed from calciferous sandstone coursed rubble and has a Welsh slate roof, with corrugated iron on the barn.
The single-storey house has four bays, while the adjoining barn is two-storey and forms an L-shape. There is a plank door set in a flush quoined surround with a dated lintel, flanked by small blocked original windows. To the left, there are chamfered 2-light mullioned windows that have had their mullions removed. The barn to the right features a large cart entrance with plank doors and slit vents. An extension at right angles has a blocked ground floor entrance and slit vents above. A further 19th-century extension to the barn on the right has a dated and inscribed lintel that likely originated from the farmhouse.
