Description
RAF Spadeadam is home to the Blue Streak Rocket, a Grade II listed structure. This missile, which served as the first stage rocket booster, measures 60 feet 4 inches in length and is made from stainless steel with a thickness of 0.019-0.025 inches. It weighs approximately 6 tons. The engine bay has been partially stripped, and the engines have been removed, although several pressurized bottles, associated pipework, and electrical components remain in place.
The rocket is mounted on a braced, square section steel handling frame, which features pairs of small carrier wheels at each of its four corners. Each carrying frame was specifically designed for its respective rocket and was constructed at Spadeadam.
