Description
No. 55 Roper Street is a house with a shop, which was derelict at the time of inspection in September 1989. It dates from the early to mid 19th century but likely includes earlier work, although an internal inspection was not possible. The building is made of rendered sandstone and has a slate roof. It has four unequal storeys, with the first floor, which contains the main rooms, being taller than the upper storeys, which are probably used as storerooms. The facade features a three-window range, with two windows on the first floor, all having raised surrounds. Some horned sash windows remain, while other openings have been blocked. The mid-19th century shop front includes simple pilasters and a panelled door set in deep reveals, with access to the entry located at the extreme left. The building is included for its group value, and an internal inspection could reveal interesting features.
