Description

No 54 with properties to the rear, formerly known as Rudd's Court, is a house with a shop that was derelict at the time of inspection in September 1989. It dates from the late 17th century but was largely rebuilt in the late 18th century. The building is constructed of rendered sandstone and has a slate roof. Originally, it had a single-cell plan with a rear stack and an adjacent newel stair. It stands three storeys high. The front features a tripartite sash window on the first and second floors, with 8:12:8 sashes set in reveals. The shop front is largely obscured, and there is a recessed entrance to the right. At the rear of this building is Rudd's Court, which was not accessible during the inspection. The Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England describes these as one and two-celled cottages from the mid to late 18th century, representing an important survival of artisans' accommodation located behind the main street shops and houses.
