Description

No. 56, with outbuildings and a warehouse to the rear, is a shop with storage rooms above, dating from the early 19th century, likely incorporating some 18th-century work, with later 19th-century additions at the back. The building is constructed of rendered sandstone and has a slate roof. It features a double-depth plan with a lateral open-well stair on the right and a mid-19th-century refronting on the left, which is adjacent to No. 55. The building has three storeys.

The exterior includes an older two-window front on the right, which has end pilasters with composite capitals, a moulded eaves cornice, and sill bands on the first and second floors, the latter supported by decorative brackets. The upper floor has three 12-pane sash windows set in reveals. To the left is a narrower two-window range without sill bands, featuring sash windows in reveals with raised surrounds, one of which is blocked on the second floor. A late 19th-century shop front spans the entire width of the building, designed with minimal decorations, made entirely of timber with plate-glass windows that include glazing bars.

Internally, the building has been significantly altered in the late 19th century. The stair features turned newels, although most of the balusters have been removed. The rear range, which includes cellars, contains suspended timber-framed storerooms. The warehouse at the back has been reduced in height and features timber floors supported by slender round-section iron columns.
