Description

The Spring Head and Horse Trough is a late 18th century or earlier structure located in Aspatria. It features a shallow rectangular stone water trough that is set just above ground level to collect water from the feeder spring. On either side of the trough, there are low retaining walls made of roughly-coursed sandstone, each approximately 1.25 metres high and extending about 2 metres in length. This trough was used for horse-drawn traffic on the colliery road to Baggrow before the railway was developed, as well as for transporting grain to and from the local mill.
