Description
The Ship Hotel is a hotel built in the late 18th century or early 19th century. It features painted stucco and roughcast walls, with V-jointed quoins and an eaves cornice set on a chamfered plinth. The roof is made of graduated greenslate with coped gables and kneelers, and there are painted stucco chimney stacks. The building has three storeys and five bays. A 20th-century door is set within a painted stone architrave and is topped by a 20th-century gabled porch. The windows are sash style, also within painted stone architraves. Although it is a large hotel for a small town, it was once a significant sea-bathing resort for the gentry. Notably, Charles Dickens stayed here during a tour of the Lakes in 1856. An extension to the right is not of interest.
